About Me

I’m Yichun (Jennifer) Li and I’m a graduate student at Nankai University. Via the Global Transfer Programme, I’m currently studying abroad and pursuing a master’s degree in history at the University of Bristol.

I have long been curious about how religious practice plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining a wide range of relationships: between people, spirits, and places, between ritual service providers and their customers, and between the state and religious groups. In a conversation with my tutor, he recommended some of your works to me and it was so great to read such excellent articles. I first turned to Religion in China: Ties That Bind and was instantly captivated by its profound thoughts and exquisite language.

As for my experience, during my studies at Nankai University, I conducted research under Professor Xia Yan, who led me into the field of epigraphy. I followed him to towns and villages in Shaanxi and Henan to visit local stone carvings and inscriptions. Based on the findings of the fieldwork, I conducted a research on the Buddhist belief of women in tang Dynasty in combination with the records of literature and epitaphs, and this article has been successfully published in a core journal. In addition to this, in order to deepen my understanding of religion, I attended relevant courses such as “The History of People’s Religious Consciousness in Modern China”, taught by Professor Hou Jie, and it brought me a relatively systematic understanding of popular religion in China. Through continuous study and research, I have gained comprehensive knowledge in history, as well as solid historical data reading ability and writing ability.
